The Intentional Travel Philosophy: Planning Trips Based on How You Want to Feel
Travel means different things to different people.
For some, it is adventure. For others, it is rest and relaxation. Some travellers enjoy visiting as many countries as possible, while others prefer returning to places they love again and again.
Travel truly looks different for everyone.
Over time, however, I realised that the way I travel is guided by something slightly different.
I travel with intention.
Intentional travel, at least through my eyes, is about experiencing a place rather than simply passing through it. It begins with asking yourself a simple question before you even choose a destination:
How do I want to feel on this trip?
Once you understand that feeling, the destination and the experiences you choose begin to align naturally.
For me, travel has always been about connection. Connection with the atmosphere of a place, with its culture, and with the people who live there.
That often means stepping beyond where you are staying and allowing yourself to experience the destination itself.
Walking through neighbourhood streets.
Trying local food.
Observing everyday life.
Experiencing the culture that makes a place unique.
Intentional travel does not mean sacrificing comfort. Beautiful hotels, peaceful environments, and moments of rest absolutely have their place in travel.
But the experience of a destination often begins when you step outside and allow yourself to engage with the place around you.
Sometimes it means wandering through a neighbourhood street or visiting a well known landmark. Other times it means seeking out experiences that belong to the culture of the place.
In Morocco or Turkey, that might mean experiencing a traditional Hammam, a ritual that has been part of everyday life for generations.
In Ethiopia, it might mean participating in a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony, where coffee is prepared and shared in a way that reflects hospitality, culture, and community.
These are the kinds of experiences that allow you to feel connected to a place rather than simply visiting it.
One thing I have also realised about the way I travel is that it has never been about numbers.
Of course I enjoy visiting new countries. There are many places in the world that I dream of experiencing.
But intentional travel is not about ticking destinations off a list.
Sometimes it means staying longer in one place. Sometimes it means returning to a country because you feel there is still more to discover.
Many countries have multiple cities, regions, and cultures within them, and experiencing one destination rarely tells the full story of a place.
Every time you return somewhere, you begin to see it differently. You notice details you missed before. You begin to understand the rhythm of the place in a deeper way.
Intentional travel is not about how many countries you visit.
It is about how deeply you experience the ones you do.
When travel is approached with intention, it becomes more than simply moving from one destination to another.
It becomes a way of connecting with the world around you.
And that philosophy sits at the heart of how I travel and how I approach travel through WorldwidEmpress.
